Road cycling
The fortifications of Wihr-au-Val consisted of several structures that protected the place in the Middle Ages and the early modern period. These included a fortified installation and the Sonnenbourg castle, built in the 13th century. The fortifications were largely demolished in the 19th century. The most important surviving remnant, the lower gate, "Porte de Ville", was classified as a historical monument in 1934, but was heavily damaged during the destruction of the village by the Germans on June 18, 1940.
