The Bernsteinsee in Stüde is the heart of the local recreation area in Sassenburg and well known far beyond the borders of the Gifhorn district. The lake was artificially created (by sand mining for canal construction), which gives it its distinctive characteristics. The white, fine sandy beach is absolutely atypical for the region and gives the lake its name (even if you are unlikely to find real amber there). Since the lake is a groundwater lake without murky inflows, it is regularly one of the cleanest bathing waters in Lower Saxony.
