Originally, the steel truss section of this bridge was land. However, a flood in 1957 eroded one bank, leaving bridge only, jutting out into the river. Instead of repairing and rebuilding the eroded bank, a steel truss bridge was constructed as a pedestrian bridge from the remaining section to the current bank. The roadway was completed the following year, just upstream.
