    Hiking

Here the Nakasendō takes a sharp turn. This turn was designed on purpose as a strategic element. As the main road to Tokyo in the Edo period the Nakasendō had great military importance for Tokugawa Shoguns. Masugata (90 degree corners) were built into the roads of many shukuba in order to slow down enemy forces in case of an invasion. In Tsumago-juku the masugata is very well preserved and also includes several stone steps that well convey its original strategic purpose.
