Since 2004, Filip Balcaen has owned and, together with his family, resided at Spiere Castle.
He invested four years in renovating the castle. The coach houses now house the collection of vintage cars Balcaen has built up over the years. The castle itself was furnished by antique dealer and designer Axel Vervoordt.
Balcaen is one of the wealthiest Belgians. The company most closely associated with his name is Balta (Balcaen Carpets), a group he sold in 2004.
Since then, he has been active in a wide variety of sectors.
