Käthe Kollwitz wasn't interested in kings, generals, or great victors. She drew people that hardly anyone else drew: workers, mothers, the hungry. From 1928 to 1933, she headed the master studio for graphic arts at the Academy of Arts.

She was born in Königsberg in 1867. Her father was a master bricklayer. He had studied law but was denied a government position because of his liberal views. The family was politically independent and socially critical. This influenced her from an early age.
