According to the State Office for Surveying and Geo-Basic Information, Bärenbach was officially declared the geographical center of the country on December 1, 1982 by then Prime Minister Bernhard Vogel. The ceremonial inauguration of the boulder with a stone slab took place on July 23, 1983.
