In 1675,hemden received the so-called Cross Chapel, which served the Dutch Catholics from Aalten and Bredevoort who were unable to practice their faith and in 1751, as an auxiliary parish, had 27 German and 451 Dutch Catholics. With the freedom of religion in Holland, the Kreuzkapelle lost its importance at the end of the 18th century. The parish was moved to Barlo in 1823, the chapel was demolished and e.g. T. used for the new construction of the Barloer St. Helena Church. A cross reminds of the former location. In 1939,hemden received the St. Helena Chapel, which had been relocated from the Bocholt forest recreation area to Alte Aaltener Straße, as a place of worship, which has since been cared for by the Bocholt Capuchins.

You can only understand this place if you know its history and its special location on the border with the Netherlands.

This cross stands here in memory of the former Chapel of the Cross. This spot is also used for open-air services on special occasions.
A chapel stood here from 1675 to 1823. During the Reformation in the 16th century, Catholics in the Netherlands were forbidden to attend church. In 1675, the Bishop of Münster, Bernhard von Galen, had a chapel built in Hemden for the Catholics from Aalten and Bredevoort: the Chapel of the Cross. This "auxiliary parish" included 27 German and 451 Dutch Catholics. In 1712, the chapel was restored and simultaneously expanded. When it was demolished in 1823, some of the material was used for the new church in Barlo. Some fragments of the leaded glass windows have been preserved.

There is a book, "Aalten and Bredevoort in Lying Times," by B.D. Rots, which states: "When they (the Dutch, especially from Aalten and Bredevoort) went to church in the Chapel of the Cross, they had to take a shovel and spade with them to avoid any trouble. Women had to hide the gold cross they wore on Sundays, otherwise they risked having it torn off. The Catholics from Bredevoort came along the church path through the Witte Veen."
