The Van Thuy Tu community center, which resembles a Chinese temple, was built in 1762. Since then, fishermen have prayed here to the sea gods, asking for protection. Whales, considered the embodiment of the sea gods, are especially revered. When a whale dies off the coast of Phan Thiet, it is buried on the grounds. After three years, the bones are moved to the pagoda. Over 100 whale skeletons have been collected there. The remains of a giant fin whale are displayed in a separate building.
