The Kosma Yakhromsky Monastery was founded between 1483 and 1494 by a certain Kosma, a native of the village of Zernova, near the village of Rozhnovo in the Suzdal region, on the site where, as a child, he discovered a holy icon of the Dormition of the Mother of God on a tree. According to legend, Saint Kosma originally built a wooden church here dedicated to the Dormition of the Most Holy Theotokos, in which he placed the image that appeared to him. In 1624, the monastery was granted the nearby village of Nebyloye. History is silent on what else belonged to the Kosma Monastery. It is known that in the 15th-17th centuries, the buildings of the Kosma Yakhromsky Monastery were wooden, quickly deteriorated, and were repeatedly rebuilt over the centuries. Between 1666 and 1675, during the abbacy of Saint Mitrofan, the stone Church of the Savior and a cell block were built in 1669, and the Cathedral Church of the Assumption in 1675. In 1694, the Nikolskaya Church was built. In 1657, a bell tower was erected, and in 1909, a 311-pood (9,200-pound) bell was hoisted to it. During Soviet times, it was destroyed, as was the stone fence with four towers.
