The most imposing building in Aigio is dedicated to the Assumption of Mary and boasts a 300-year history. The cathedral was built by Ernst Ziller, a neoclassical architect and archaeologist from Saxony, who left behind more than 600 public buildings in Greece. After the previous structure was destroyed by an earthquake, construction of this building began in 1899. Ziller created a majestic, 25-meter-high cruciform church with a Renaissance-style dome. The church is symmetrically framed by four bell towers.
