Candi Mendut is a Buddhist temple located about three kilometers east of Candi Borobudur. Along with Borobudur, it is one of the most important examples of Hindu-Javanese art. Today, Candi Mendut is a single tower. In its heyday, it likely stood at the center of a large monastery. Like Candi Borobudur, this site was probably abandoned in the 14th century when the population gradually converted to Islam.
Candi Mendut was rediscovered in 1834; however, restoration work did not begin until 1908 and was largely completed by 1925.
