Built in the 16th century at the foot of the Guadiana River to house the statue of the city's later patron saint, from whom the church later takes its name. An artillery bastion was added in the 17th century to defend the city on the most exposed part of the river's coast, only part of which remains. The Lisbon earthquake of 1755 destroyed part of the church's facade.
