Parish Church of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, Abano Terme

    Part 1
The Church of the Sacred Heart in Abano Terme is a sacred place of modern architectural design, characterized by the white stone of Asiago.

The Church of the Sacred Heart in Abano Terme is a sacred place of modern architectural design: it was built in 1958 according to a design by the engineer Giulio Brunetta (Professor at the University of Padua) in the heart of the Euganean spa town. For this reason, the Parish of the Sacred Heart of Jesus is also commonly known as the Parish of the Spas. The need for a new church for the citizens of Abano Terme and for hotel guests was felt from the 18th century onwards, so much so that the Grand Hotel Orologio (18th century) had a small church built inside during those years, as the Cathedral of San Lorenzo was too far away for the sick undergoing spa treatments. The first church dedicated to the Sacred Heart was built in 1779 specifically for the guests of the thermal baths at the foot of Montirone Park, based on a design by the architect Domenico Cerato, who had previously designed Prato della Valle and the Cathedral of San Lorenzo in Abano Terme. During the 19th and mid-20th centuries, it served as an oratory dependent on the cathedral, fulfilling its liturgical and pastoral duties very well. When it became too small to accommodate the growing population of Abano Nuova, the idea arose to build a new, larger church. This became a reality in the mid-1950s, and it was consecrated in 1978. In the 1990s and 2000s, the church underwent partial renovations, which altered its original design.

Parish Church of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, Abano Terme

      Part 2
The facade of the Church of the Sacred Heart in Abano Terme is characterized by white Asiago stone, while the interior features a wooden slatted ceiling. The main altar, originally leaning against the wall of the presbytery, was rebuilt in 1973 for liturgical reasons; the front that adorned it, Jesus the Good Shepherd, the work of the Paduan sculptor Carlo Mandelli, is now located at the base of the ambo. The original spherical tabernacle is the magnificent work of the goldsmith and sculptor Mario Pinton, who was very active and highly regarded in the Padua area. We also owe him the crucifix that dominates the altar, as well as the twelve bronze candelabra bearing the names of the apostles. A massive wooden crown (weighing six quintals), the work of sculptor Dante Moro di Falcade (1963), hangs above the presbytery. The colorful stained-glass windows of the church and baptistery are the work of Franciscan friar Costantino Ruggeri. At the entrance to the church is an olive wood crucifix by sculptor Gianfranco Schiavo, whose bust also depicts John Paul II with his crosier. The twelve Stations of the Cross are the work of Professor Giovanni "Toti" Salmanso, a talented artist and student of Saetti, professor of art history, and mayor of Abano Terme from 1982 to 1987. The two altarpieces are the sublime work of Paolo De Poli: they are two large copper plates with high-fired enamel, made according to a design by Pino Casarini. On the right side is the altar of the Sacred Heart, featuring a precious mosaic by the great master Bruno Saetti, who offers an original interpretation of the iconography depicting the love of Christ. Finally, the "ecumenical" Chapel of Saint Joseph, located on the left side of the church and crowned by an original bell tower, deserves mention. Comprising a cross-training room and a circular classroom that intersect but remain separate, it is designed for both worship and conferences.
