    Abano Terme
    A holiday destination prized for its thermal waters for over 2000 years
    Abano Terme, the most important and oldest thermal spa in Europe, is enchantingly situated at the foot of the Euganean Hills, in the heart of the Veneto region.

    The name comes from the Greek “à ponos,” meaning “he who frees from pain.” Thus, the town's true purpose is already evident in its name.

    The Municipality
    The municipality covers an area of 21.57 km² and is predominantly flat. The average elevation is 14 meters above sea level.

    Exceptions to this are a few hills, such as Monte Daniele, on whose summit stands the graceful Benedictine convent, easily accessible on foot from the thermal spa, and Monte Ortone, on whose slopes lies the village of Monteortone, which grew up around the Marian pilgrimage church.

    Abano enjoys a mild climate for most of the year, with an average annual temperature of 14°C (57°F). The sky is often cloudless and sunny, though rainy days are more frequent in autumn and spring. The town currently has a population of over 19,000.

    Famous people who have lived in Abano Terme:

    Pietro d’Abano, born in Abano in 1257, was a renowned physician, philosopher, astrologer, and alchemist who contributed to the dissemination of Aristotelian philosophy as commented upon by Averroes.

    Francesco Petrarch came to Abano during his stay in Venice to treat his gout at the thermal baths. He also visited Arquà, which he liked so much that he decided to spend the last years of his life there.

    The poet, historian, and philologist Pietro Bembo (15th-16th centuries) lived at the Villa Bembiana in Monterosso, a hamlet of Abano.

    ``` Ugo Foscolo lived at the Villa Foscolo in the Feriole district when he wrote his novel "Last Letters of Jacopo Ortis" (1796).
      Abano Terme / According to Legend
      According to legend, the Greek hero Hercules and his heroic companions, with whom he had set out to defeat the giant Geryon, were revitalized after their heroic deed by the miraculous properties of this warm water. Drawn by the beauty of the hills, they decided never to return to Greece and to settle here. Because of the excellence of their lineage, the hills were called the "Euganean" Hills. The spring that had given the heroes such great refreshment was called "Aponon" in Greek. To right the wrong done to Geryon, Hercules himself built a temple in Abano in his honor and granted it the status of a true oracle. As Suetonius reports, this legend was well known in Roman antiquity; so it happened that Emperor Tiberius, on his journey to Illyria, wished to consult this famous oracle. He received a decisive answer: he should throw golden dice into the spring at the very spot where Abano now stands, to learn his fate. Legend has it that the dice made the water especially precious, bestowing upon it extraordinary healing properties for various ailments.
        Abano is Abano, not much to say, you have to go there.
