This simple but pretty church is somewhat hidden in Altheim. The newly designed garden is particularly beautiful. Together with the new pilgrims' hostel in the old rectory, it is a popular stop for pilgrims on the Way of St. James.
Not far from the small brook Bickenalb lies the Pirminiusgarten, somewhat hidden behind the Altheim village church. It lies on the Way of St. James from Hornbach to Metz. The newly designed garden in the former parish garden of the Catholic Church of St. Andreas in Altheim, the "Hortus pirminii", is a tribute to the life's work of St. Pirminius, the founder of the Hornbach monastery. Nine square flower beds represent the founding of the saint's monastery, and a rose arch symbolizes the "paradisiacal" in his life. There is also a rose arbor, a water trough, a small orchard, herb and flower beds and a vineyard in the garden. A visit to the village church is also worthwhile, here you can marvel at St. James.
The approx. 1,400 m2, overgrown parish garden was planned by Altheim citizens, who later founded the Pirminius Garten development association, as a newly designed garden in cooperation with the city of Blieskastel. The new facility was designed "as a reminiscence of the life's work of the messenger of faith Pirminius". After the first clearing work, a concrete surface was replaced by new paving, a ramp was created to the lower area, and walls were replaced or rebuilt. An essential design element, the former cemetery wall, was partially renovated after it was exposed and partially grounded. A small vineyard with dry stone walls was laid out here. Representing the founding of the monastery of St. Pirminius created nine square beds that are replanted over and over again every year. The beds also provide flower decorations for the church. The middle bed stands for the last founding of the monastery by Pirminius, the Hornbach monastery, where he also died. The garden and the new pilgrims' hostel in the old rectory form a "stopping point" for hikers.
