The waterworks in neo-Gothic forms was built from 1873 by the Rheinische Wasserwerkgesellschaft on what was then the southern outskirts of Bonn to supply the city with filtrate from the banks of the Rhine; the opening took place on April 1, 1875.

The waterworks was built from 1873 to 1875 to supply Bonn with Rhine bank filtrate. The plant was shut down in 1958, but was still used for water treatment for emergency reserves until 1985. The German Bundestag met here from 1986 to 1993.
