The airport, with its 2,265-meter-long runway (15/33), formerly served only the then-monopoly airline Drukair, which owned and operated all facilities. Since August 2010, the Nepalese carrier Buddha Air has been permitted to operate flights from Kathmandu to the airport. The private airline Bhutan Airlines connects Paro with Delhi, Kolkata, and Gaya (India), as well as Kathmandu and Bangkok. Flights to Dhaka, Yangon, and Singapore are planned for the future. The approach is considered difficult and only feasible for experienced pilots; the final leg must be flown visually without instrument guidance systems due to the challenging terrain.
