Swallow's nest houses are windowless, usually multi-story concrete structures built specifically for breeding swiftlets. Inside, the birds construct their nests from saliva, which is sold as an expensive delicacy ("bird's nest soup"). Recordings of swallows' songs are played over loudspeakers to attract them. The buildings often appear as abandoned, unfinished structures, but they are lucrative production facilities – especially in South Vietnam.
