    Just a few steps from the athletics stadium lie the Devil's Holes, ancient karst caves in the Muschelkalk limestone of the Kernberge hills. They were formed by the erosion of gypsum layers and were first mentioned in 1319 – making them among the oldest known caves in Germany.

    Today, the area is a nature reserve. The caves are not open to the public, but information panels along the path provide a clear overview of the geology and history of the site. A short break here is well worth it – cool air, interesting insights, and a peaceful spot of nature right in the heart of Jena.
