The Church of St. James the Apostle in Quintanar de la Orden (Toledo) is one of the most emblematic churches in La Mancha, with a rich history linked to the Order of Santiago and architecture that reflects centuries of artistic evolution.

In 1498, inspectors from the Order of Santiago described an old and dilapidated church on the same site where the current church was built.

Construction of the new church began in 1525, featuring three naves and arches. In 1537, the master builder Francisco de Luna (from the Monastery of Uclés) was commissioned to design the tower, which was then built by the Basque stonemasons Pedro de Arausia and Juan de Verdolaza.

The work was considered complete in 1575. The town councilors declared that “the tower is so tall and thick that there are not six larger ones in Spain.”
