The current observatory was built on the Polish side of the Karkonosze Mountains in the 1960s (construction began in 1966 and was completed in 1974). It consists of three futuristic, disc-shaped structures (so-called "UFO shapes") stacked on top of each other. This iconic architecture makes the building a landmark of the Karkonosze Mountains.

The observatory is used for continuous weather observation and climate research. It is operated by the Polish Institute of Meteorology and Water Management (IMGW – Instytut Meteorologii i Gospodarki Wodnej).
