The white heron is an elegant, slender bird with all-white plumage and long legs, which it uses to wade through shallow water in search of food. In Portugal (including around Tavira and the Ria Formosa), you can often see the little egret (Egretta garzetta). This heron feeds primarily on fish, frogs, and insects, which it catches by pacing quickly through the water and striking with its sharp beak. During the breeding season, it develops elegant, fine feathers on its back and head—making it even more impressive to see.
