The base of the tower was built in 1250 at the latest. The overlying masonry was built around 1500. After a fire in 1863, the pitched roof was changed and created the upper part of the tower in its present form. In addition, a stone balustrade was installed at 21.5 m height. The present wooden staircase inside the tower dates from the middle of the 20th century.

Climbing the tower is worthwhile: from the top there is an impressive view of the whole city. Visitors receive the key to the high watchtower in return for a deposit and a written explanation of the opening hours of the tourist information at Scheuerngasse 4.
