Who was Irenäus Papamichail?
Ecclesiastical Office: He was a significant Greek Orthodox clergyman. After studies at the Sorbonne in Paris, he was elected Metropolitan of Samos and Ikaria in 1926.
Resistance Fighter: During World War II, he was active in the Greek resistance against the occupying powers.
Political Engagement: After Italy's armistice in 1943, he briefly led the provisional free administration of Samos before he had to flee from German bombing raids to the Middle East, where he became an advisor to the Greek government-in-exile.
