Contrary to what the name might initially suggest, the Großalmeyerschloß is not a building. In the past, 'Schloß' referred to castle-like rock formations, and around 1600, a farm owner from Kirchl near Hohenau bore the name Almeyr. The Großalmeyerschloß, at 1196 meters high, rises significantly above the surrounding wooded areas. The rock crevices, formed over the course of weathering, are now inhabited by specialized ferns and lichens, whose presence is of pan-European importance. From the summit, one can look not only into the foreland of the National Park but also, for example, at the Lusengipfel.
