You’ll most likely find hiking up Beinn Buidhe to be peaceful compared to the nearby Arrochar Alps. Lying just north of the head of Loch Fyne, this isolated Munro requires a lengthy walk-in, although you can always cycle up the access track if you want to save yourself some time.

With a summit at 3,110 feet (948 m) and a sprawling ridgeline, this is a full day’s hike for most walkers and fantastic views reward your effort. Your route options are varied between grassy paths and easy, scrambly routes so you can adapt your adventure with ease. If you’re up for a walk or ride-in, this is a splendid, non-technical Munro.

A rugged ridge with raucous views

The most common approaches to Beinn Bhuidhe are via Glen Fyne or alongside the River Shira and Lochan Shira. Both involve reasonable walk-ins but the tracks are perfectly suited to mountain bikes. A relatively new track has been built as part of a hydroelectric project and has become a popular descent back into Glen Fyne.

Taking the route past the waterfalls above Inverchorachan is a beautiful ascent option, particularly in summer when the slopes are a lush green with voluminous bracken. The path is steep and a notorious rocky step is found on this ascent, but it’s not challenging if you tread carefully.

From Lochan Shira, hike through forestry plantations to Tom a’ Phiobaire. From here, enjoy an undulating ridge all the way to the summit. No matter how tough your walk, on a clear day, Beinn Bhuidhe’s views are breathtaking. Ben Lui lies to the north while Beinn Ime, Ben Vane and Ben Vorlich squat to the south east in the Arrochars.

Beinn Bhuidhe can be hiked in good weather all year round but winter conditions should only be hiked in by those with experience and the right equipment. Pubs and hotels are dotted along the A83 whilst Inveraray is the nearest settlement.

Best Hikes to Beinn Bhuidhe Summit

Tips

  • An isolated Munro, located at the head of Loch Fyne.
Beinn Bhuidhe is generally fairly quiet peak, possibly due to the long walk in and distance from other major peaks. This peak is best summited on a clear day, as the views from the summit are sublime.

  • My favourite view from the summit is towards Ben Cruachan. This Munro has a long walk/cycle in through Glen Fyne.
