In the 12th century, Gunther, Duke of Rethel, founded several monasteries on his estates, including the Laval Dieu monastery in Monthermé in 1128 for Premonstratensian canons, which was dedicated to Saint Remigius of Reims. In the following centuries, Monthermé belonged alternately to the House of Flanders, the House of Burgundy, the Guise and the Bourbon-Conti, who gave it to Louis XIII in 1629. left over.
