The Paris Obelisk at the Place de la Concorde was created in the 13th century BC during the reign of Pharaoh Ramses II in the Temple of Luxor. It is the oldest monument in Paris and was presented to France in 1830 by Egyptian Viceroy Muhammad Ali Pasha to commemorate the decipherment of hieroglyphs by French scholars. The obelisk arrived in Paris in 1833 after a three-year journey by ship and was placed on the Place de la Concorde in 1836.
