The first 'stedehuus' on the Markt in Middelburg was lost in a major fire in 1426. On the other side of the Markt, the construction of a new (current) town hall started in 1452. The facade was completed in 1458. For centuries, work was done to achieve the final result. Eight members of the Keldermans family of architects from the South of the Netherlands contributed to this. On May 17, 1940, a German bombardment destroyed most of the beautiful building. After a long period of restoration, it has been proudly displayed in the heart of the city for many years now.
