The statue stands on the Roman Square in Velzeke. Erected in 1998 (by artist Philippe Timmermans) for the Caesar Festival, it depicts Julius Caesar as a symbol of Velzeke's Roman history. Velzeke was a Roman vicus (settlement) on the Boulogne-Asse-Tongeren highway and the Velzeke-Bavay Roman road, and therefore has a Provincial Archaeological Centre.
