The red and white half-timbered houses nestle closely together; the four-gabled house from the 15th century, in particular, transports strollers back to a fairytale past. The beautifully preserved half-timbered houses testify to the prosperity Monreal achieved through sheep's wool processing and cloth production from the 17th century onwards. In the second half of the 19th century, handcraft was no longer competitive against international, industrialized competitors, and the population became impoverished. A fate Monreal shares with the equally picturesque town of Monschau.
