The inscriptions itself are in Greek, but it was made by Roman soldiers who had to go through the Canyon/ up over the hill and asked an unknown deity for protection.

The canyon had highwaymen who wanted to rob & kill unsuspecting travelers. The highwaymen had the tactical advantage as the could easily shoot arrows from above.
