The stretch of road between Dundonnell and Braemore Junction is known as the Destitution Road, having originally been built by crofters during the Highland Potato Famine of 1846 and 1847. Payment for the workers was mere oatmeal rations, hence the name. On a lighter note, towards its higher reaches the road provides glorious views of An Teallach.
