The square is a tribute to Diego Maradona, the famous Argentine footballer who became a folk hero during his time at SSC Napoli in the 1980s.
There is a large mural of Maradona on the square. The place has become a kind of shrine, where fans leave flowers, scarves, candles, and photos.
For many Neapolitans, Maradona symbolizes pride, hope, and justice, as he brought international success to the city during a period of social and economic difficulties.
Today, Maradona Square is an important meeting place and a popular stop for visitors who want to understand Naples and its football culture.
