It was restored again in 1960 and was still in use until the 1970s. At this time it ceased operations because quicklime was already being introduced and many residents complained about the smoke and smell when operating the kiln.
The town hall acquired this area in 1983 to run an industry for drying “chocolate sharks” (Scymnus lichia) from the deep sea of Madeira.
