Embark on a demanding yet rewarding hike from Selva to Rifugio Juac via the Stevia trail, a loop covering 5.1 miles (8.2 km) with a significant elevation gain of 2222 feet (677 metres). This moderate difficulty route typically takes around 3 hours and 46 minutes to complete. You will find the ascent to the Stevia Hut consistently steep, with some sections featuring well-maintained paths and even wooden steps, but expect exposed areas and a challenging descent via the “Palota.” From the Stevia Hut, you can enjoy extensive panoramic views of Vallunga and Chedul valleys, Sassolungo, Sella, Val Gardena, Alpe di Siusi, and the distant Sciliar Massif, alongside picturesque grassy plateaus and alpine meadows.
For your visit, both Rifugio Juac and Rifugio Stevia offer excellent opportunities for rest and refreshments along the way, providing inviting atmospheres amidst the unique alpine pastures. Consider hiking this trail in autumn, from mid-September onwards, to witness the spectacular “Burning Dolomites” phenomenon. During this time, the larch needles turn vibrant shades of yellow, orange, and red, and the Dolomites appear to glow a magical red in the special sunlight, making for a particularly captivating experience under crystal-clear skies.
This trail is situated within the Puez-Odle Nature Park, a UNESCO World Natural Heritage site, highlighting its natural significance. The Stevia Hut itself sits at approximately 2,300 meters, making it one of the highest alpine pastures in the Dolomites. Keep an eye out for the distinctive dead tree at Steviola, a popular spot for photographers, and observe the sheep grazing on the lush alpine meadows, adding to the trail's unique charm.
