The historic center of Riva has preserved its medieval layout: except for a few houses built on the site once occupied by fields, the modern town has developed almost entirely on the hill behind the original center. From the beginning, the town's construction took into account the natural features of the area: the town developed on a strip of land bordered to the north by the hill, to the south by the lake, and at either end by two streams: the Val Terlera stream to the east and the San Rocco stream to the west. Seven alleys run perpendicular to the lake through the town: these paths are inclined because they trace the beds of ancient streams, later channeled, which carried water from the mountains into the lake basin. Stone houses, still in excellent condition today, were built along these waterways starting in the 12th century.
