The path is not very exciting, but leads through a very beautiful beech forest.

The Eifel National Park was established on January 1, 2004, and is the first national park in North Rhine-Westphalia. With its creation, the state pursued the goal of protecting a large natural area and largely leaving it to natural development – true to the guiding principle of "letting nature be nature."

The protected area encompasses large parts of the Kermeter forest as well as adjacent landscapes around the Rursee lake and the Urft reservoir. The region had previously been used for a variety of purposes, including forestry, military operations, and water management. The conversion of formerly commercially managed coniferous forests into near-natural beech and mixed forests played a particularly important role in the park's establishment.

A key reason for designating the national park was the ecological significance of the ancient beech forests, which are now part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site "Ancient and Primeval Beech Forests of Europe."
