Southeast of Lauterbach rises the local mountain of the district town in the Vogelsberg, the Hainig (417m). On the Hainig, in the middle of an old oak forest, stands the Hainigturm, a former wooden observation tower that was first built in 1882 and then rebuilt as a stone tower in 1907.

The Hainigturm is a popular destination for hikers in the Lautertal. The climb to the Hainigturm is beautiful, whether you start from Lauterbach or from Eisenbach Castle. The oaks that surround the Hainigturm are said to be up to a thousand years old.

From the Hainigturm you can enjoy an uninterrupted view over the Lautertal and deep into the Rhön to the east and to Fulda. The door to the entrance is usually open during the hiking season (April to October).

Great view from above. Very well made tower (and nice and cool inside). The Hainigturm is built from natural stones and stands in an oak forest. It is a good 21 meters high and has a viewing platform at the top.

The Hainigturm is a listed building and is a proud 21.2 meters high. The tower in its current stone form has existed since 1907.
