The name Karoli derives from St. Karl (Latin Carolus) Borromäus (1538 - 1584).

He was bishop and cardinal of Milan, reform bishop of the Council of Trento and a driving force of the church's renewal movements. When the plague raged in northern Italy, he was passionate about the plague sufferers. The picture in the high altar, the main picture in the fresco of the nave, recalls this charitable work.

In the 17th century, there were some Italian salesmen in Waldkirchen, among them the businessman Bernhard Linus, who venerated Cardinal Karl Borromäus very much. He founded the "Karoli Chapel" in 1655 in honor of the cardinal. In 1756 the chapel was expanded, painted and equipped with a new altar (in the Rococo style). The ceiling fresco in the presbytery represents the old Waldkirchen around 1750. In recent years, most recently in 2000/2001, several renovations and repairs were mostly carried out by volunteers.

The church was and is a popular place of worship. Idyllically situated in the middle of the ancient linden trees, it attracts many hikers, art lovers and worshipers. The "Emm output" on Easter Monday, the "peace petition" of the "women" on Whit Monday and the "Leonhardi ride" at the beginning of November are common customs.

At the lower end of Lindenallee, a “crystal between heaven and earth” delimits the entire ensemble around the Karoli chapel. This installation made of different sized, different blue glass stones was built for the 2007 garden show. It is a conscious counterpoint to the chapel and the avenue. The nightly lighting also creates a magical atmosphere.

The Karoli Chapel (eigtl Church of St. Charles Borromeo, partly also Karolikapelle) is a 1665 built adjacent church of the parish Waldkirchen. It is located on the 662 m high Karoliberg at the end of an avenue of linden trees. (Source Wikipedia)
