The rapid increase in the population of Charlottenburg to over 100,000, and the partial accommodation of the court in "tenement houses", prompted the city fathers to decide in 1894 to build two court buildings, one for the "civil department" and one for the "penal department". . A rectangular building site measuring 108.6 m x 40.1 m was available for the “civil departments”, which was surrounded on all sides by newly built streets and the front of which forms what is now the district court square, which was then known as “Schmuckplatz”. At first, only a part of the present building was erected. With a width of 40.1 m on the front side to the district court and a length of 46.4 m, its dimensions were less than half of the current length between Suarezstrasse and Holtzendorffstrasse. Construction planning and construction were in the hands of the "Landesbauinspector" Poetsch and the government master builder Claren. The construction period lasted from July 1895 to November 1897. The Brandenburg Baroque style and the yellowish color of the Silesian sandstone give the building a pleasing appearance, although it is towered majestically by the flagpole on the central projection, the tip of which is crowned by the Prussian eagle.
