The Graburg is neither a castle nor a castle ruin, but rather a mountain massif of shell limestone, lying on a base of red clay. Natural limestone beech forests, rocks, and landslides characterize the area. Due to its "scenic beauty and uniqueness," as well as its importance as a habitat for rare and endangered animal and plant species, the Graburg was declared a natural monument in 1915 and, starting in May 1965, a nature reserve.
