Jasper is a tourist town at an altitude of 1062 metres with around 4,300 inhabitants, which is unavoidable if you want to spend your holiday in Jasper National Park and are travelling without a camper and/or tent. If you are travelling east-west, you can walk through the town on the main road at a normal pace in around 20 minutes. If you are travelling north-south, you can do it in less than ten minutes. In the past, Jasper was always in the shadow of hip Banff, which had the pleasant consequence that the town developed in a much more adapted way; you will look in vain for architectural sins here. One special feature of Jasper is its location in the middle of the national park, which means that the political sovereignty of the municipal assembly is limited, and the national park administration has a say in all decisions. You also cannot simply move to Jasper; that is only possible if you work in the town or in the national park.

In the centre of Jasper, there are mainly restaurants, small shops, supermarkets and souvenir shops. The centrally located train station is where well-known long-distance trains stop alongside kilometer-long freight trains.

Jasper is a small mountain village in Jasper National Park and the commercial center of the national park. A nice little town with many shops and restaurants.

We highly recommend visiting the Paw Bear Bakery while in Jasper. Sourdough bread is served here in the mornings, but it always sells out very quickly. But coffee and cake are just as excellent.
