Beautiful typical Mecklenburg village church. As an open church, it invites you to pause for a moment.

Between Grevesmühlen and the town of Klütz, the village of Damshagen with its St. Thomas Church has been embedded in the wonderful landscape of "Klützer Winkel" for over 780 years. The place, founded by German settlers, was originally called Thomashagen and, like the church, was mentioned in a document in the Ratzeburg tithe register, a document drawn up in 1230 on the collection and distribution of tithe for all villages in the diocese of Ratzeburg. This historical document is now in the main state archive in Schwerin.
First there was probably a wooden church here. The only remaining piece of equipment from the previous church is the granite baptismal font from the early 13th century. Around 1330 the wooden church was replaced by a stone structure. The single-nave, Gothic church has a choir that ends with five sides of an octagon to the east. Outside and inside there have been various renovations over the centuries. Two chapels have been added on the north side. One is a burial chapel, the other was the stairway to the patronage stalls. In 1730 a rectangular tower with a pyramid helmet was added to the west.
