On the head of the Kieferle, the highest mountain in the southern Thuringian slate mountains with 868 m, operated from 1962 to 1991, the former Soviet army a radar station. The huge radars monitored the airspace westward during the Cold War.

In 2006, the buildings were demolished. There are still some small relics to be found. Very nice are still the individual positions, in the form of protective walls, to see in which stood the radar.

The Kieferle near Steinheid (district of Sonneberg) is 867.2 m above sea level. NHN high mountain in the Thuringian Slate Mountains and thus the second highest mountain of this (partial) mountain range, which represents the eastern part of the Thuringian Forest.

To the west-southwest, the valley of the Grümpen, whose eastern source is on the western slope, clearly separates it from the almost equally high dry spruce, on whose northern and eastern slopes there are further sources. To the east it is bounded by the Göritz. The Schwarza also rises north of the mountain. In the south is the 837 m high Rittersberg, whose eastern neighbor is the Breitenberg.

Since the first-mentioned rivers flow into the Main and thus ultimately into the Rhine, but the Schwarza into the Saale and thus into the Elbe, the mountain lies on the Rhine-Elbe watershed. Located to the south of the Rennsteig, which runs over the neighboring Sandberg, the Kieferle roofs south and is part of the Southern High Slate Mountains.
