The small ice pond was created in the 19th century by Rudolf Zersch for beer cooling.
The large ice pond was created in the 18th century by Count Heinrich 43. Reuß-Köstritz. On the island, there was originally around 1806 a monument made of stacked rocks with a sarcophagus designed by Berlin architect Friedrich. It was called "Amalienstein". The "Amalienstein" was destroyed after 1945.
