As the oldest brick church in this Baltic Sea region, St. Michael's Church in Lütjenburg is one of Germany's listed churches. Built with a single nave by Adolf II of Schauenburg, the church was first mentioned in 1156. Built in the Romanesque style, its extensions and interior furnishings reveal numerous elements from different eras:

    - For example, medieval ceiling paintings were discovered in the dome above the organ loft.
    - The imposing triumphal cross with its three preserved figures is dated to the late Gothic period of the 15th century.
    - The elaborately carved winged altar is also considered a late Gothic work, dating from 1467.
    - The pulpit is known to have been installed in 1608 in the Renaissance style.
    - The baptismal font with the baptismal angel was placed in front of the chancel around 1745. - In 1608, the tomb of the Reventlow Crypt for Otto von Reventlow was also erected in the northern side chapel.
    - Its sandstone relief, with the alabaster figures kneeling in front of it by the Flemish sculptor Robert Coppens, is considered one of the most important works of art of the late Renaissance in Schleswig-Holstein.

Thanks to the fact that the Lütjenburg church was already a listed building in 1968/69,
the three patronage pews of the Counts of Buchwaldt zu Helmstorf, Buchwaldt zu Neudorf, and Waldersee zu Waterneverstorf were preserved and maintained. "As symbols of feudal claims to power in the church, they contradicted the democratic sense of justice of the then-incumbent mayor of Lütjenburg, who would have liked to have them removed."

Built in 1968 by Klaus Becker, the organ, with its classical wooden construction, is not only a delight to the eye. During church services and countless concerts and musical performances, it delights congregation and audience alike with its voluminous variety of sounds.

Every evening at 6:00 p.m., the harmonious tolling of the three bronze bells announces the approaching end of the working day.

The single-nave, late Romanesque St. Michaelis Church is mentioned for the first time in 1156, with the laying of the foundation stone by Bishop Gerold von Lübeck and Count Adolf II. Inside the old brick church there is a mighty late Gothic triumphal cross, a very beautiful, valuable carved altar from 1467 and a Renaissance pulpit from 1608. Remains of medieval ceiling paintings can also be seen above the organ loft. Around 1745 the baptismal font was extended with the baptismal angel.
