The Wintam Sea Lock or simply the Wintam Lock forms the connection between the Brussels-Scheldt Sea Canal and the Scheldt.
The Wintam Sea Lock
The lock complex is located on the territory of the municipality of Bornem at the height of the hamlet of Wintam. This Klein-Brabant municipality is located in the province of Antwerp, one of the five provinces of the Flemish Region. The lock complex also forms the connection to the so-called Northern and Southern Islands. These two islands were initially intended as an industrial area but are now, after years of discussion, a nature reserve. Due to specific environmental factors and their location, the islands form an irreplaceable biotope for numerous birds, which choose this area to breed, hibernate or rest during migration. The Wintam Sea Lock provides access for seagoing, inland and pleasure craft to the Sea Canal and thus guarantees the accessibility of the Port of Brussels for ships up to 4,500 tons and pusher convoys up to 9,000 tons. The Brussels-Charleroi Canal ensures further transit to the Walloon Region.
