A corner pavilion, called gangnu in Korean, vas built on the high ground of the fortress to watch the surrounding area and to be used for leisure. The name comes from the fact that there is one such pavilion at each of the four corners of Hwaseong Fortress.
The Northwestern Corner Pavilion, located on the western side of Hwaseomun Gate, commands a panoramic view of the areas to the north and west of the fortress. The pavilion also includes a small room for soldiers with a traditional Korean under-floor heating system called ondol.
